Booked by the bride’s siblings as a surprise for the ceremony and at short notice, I knew this was going to be a genuine photojournalism shoot. Something to get the pulse racing!

There’s not much that can compete with the excitement of knowing you have little time, no prior contact with the couple, and only one chance to deliver. Scott and Karen were tying the knot and then, almost immediately, emigrating to West Virginia to start a new life together. No pressure then! Luckily I knew the venue a little, but other than that…

Working in this manner is as much about understanding and reading people – gaining trust – as it is about the technicalities and artistic choices of storytelling. You need your photographic brain running on autopilot in the background while you trust in your experience and instincts. That poor old front brain has enough to worry about juggling the logistics, personal interactions and problem solving during the all too brief time available.
